Covadonga, Asturias, Spain
The beautiful glacial lakes of Covadonga are in the Picos de Europa range, and hiking around them was high on my list of things to do in our 3 night stay in Cangas de Onis. With a day of great weather before us we packed a picnic lunch and off we went up the road to the high lakes. On the way up we shared the road with a herd of sheep trotting along with their sheepdog and only a couple of other cars, clearly the middle of May wasn’t the high season at the lakes.
The circular walk starts at Lago Ercina and winds beyond the ridge, past shepherd huts, along rocky paths and through meadows to Lago Enol. The views of the snow capped Picos above and the green meadows below are simply spectacular. The only sound in the perfectly tranquil setting was the clanging of cowbells from grazing cows. (How are those cows not deaf?) We picnicked on a rock on the edge of Lago Enol before making our way around the lake and over the ridge back to beginning.
