Overnight in Surprising, Friendly Valladolid

Plaza Mayor festival

I don’t really like one night stops, but the drive from Pinhão Portugal to San Sebastián was too long for a relaxing trip. The 4 hour drive from Pinhão in the Douro Valley to Valladolid Spain was a perfect overnight.

Valladolid was a terrific stop on the way to San Sebastián.

We walked over to Plaza Mayor with the destination of Los Zagales, a tapas bar/restaurant that’s won multiple awards plus was recommended by 2 people in the know. They were right! We tried all of the premium ones, a couple more than once. Great to be back in the land of tapas (called Pintxos in the Basque County).

Los Zagales tapas: Tierra-Mar-Aire (Earth, Sea, Air); Tigretoston; Obama in la Casa Blana (Obama in the White House)

The Fiestas Patronales San Pedro Regalado was going on in Plaza Major, a fun time packed in with all the people in the plaza enjoying the live entertainment.

Valladolid is beautifully lit at night. We strolled back from the festival admiring all the lighting affects on the buildings.

Leaving Valladolid

The next day we didn’t need to be in San Sebastian until 5:00 and had another relaxing morning with a stroll in the park before the drive. Valladolid was a delightful place with very friendly people. A terrific overnight stop, we could have spent more time if we weren’t on our way to San Sebastián.

Travel: Drive from Valladolid to San Sebastián – 3.5 hours.
